Guns aren't the problem. Culture and people are the problem. When you look at the number of gun owners versus the number of gun offenders you realize that there is a disproportionate amount of gun crimes committed by the very miniscule part of the gun owners. Factor in the number of those crimes committed with illegally obtained, stolen weapons and it get's even more obscure. Stronger prison sentencing is needed, and stronger deterents work in other countries. In the United States, and we'll say Illinois, unlawful possession of a firearm is a class A misdemeanor, eligible for no more than one year maximum. Go to Japan, which is a country compared to a state, and it's fifteen years.
Thus, the crux of the problem. Guns are dealt with very differently by the authorities. 99 percent of gun owners, regardless of the number of guns they own, fall way below the radar because they are law abiding citizens. America's grief is caused by the one percent and the illegal gun owners. That would be the mentally ill and the fifteen year old gang banger that shoots up a party.
Federal law enforcement won't pick up every gun case. Therefore, states need to vote for stricter gun regulations as deterrents, pass legislation forcing longer wait periods to ensure complete background checks, and work with the federal government to enact gun legislation that works.
Gun running is still a thing. Illegal weapons shipments are still trafficked around the world. Organized criminal enterprises in different countries still use guns, but we look at their statistics and try to compare them to ours. It's a mistake. We can't compare gun issues between us and other countries because other countries don't have the freedoms we have in the United States.
