A serial killer murders three or more people, typically over more than one month, with a cooling-off period between murders. The motive is usually psychological gratification, even sexual. Motives also include anger, thrill, money, and attention (fame) seeking.
There are signs of a potential serial killer and common behavioral traits known to exist in serial killers. They’ve been studied and put together for years by FBI agents, social scientists, and historians. Perhaps the scariest thing about serial killers is the number of them on the loose. The FBI estimates that between 25 and 50 serial killers are in the United States at any given time. However, there may be more, as studies into the phenomenon are still ongoing.
