I first heard of the crossroads when I was doing research in high school. I can’t remember what I was researching, but I stumbled across a book on occult legends. It described the place to make a deal with a demon as “the four crossroads” and was out sometime in the 1980s before I was a Freshman. My interest started there.

It’s older than anything we know, and the origins are rooted in mystery and folklore. It’s the deal with a demon, and the legends go back to medieval times when Catholic saints constantly feared the devil’s enticements. However, the Faust legend may be the strongest of such stories.
