The 4th of July weekend isn’t what the founders meant to protect when they proposed the second amendment. Mass casualty and mass shooting events are raging, and essential questions and obvious answers need to be discussed.

America and Gun Violence

For someone that carried a gun for nearly 25 years, guns are one of the most imposing tools a person can possess. After 25 years it was time to set down the gun and walk away from violence. Violence was inescapable.

Looking at the alarming number of mass shootings and gun violence over the July 4th weekend, I’m drawn back to an event in October of 2022. A man stepped out of a car at a scene, gun already in his hand, demanding answers to something that had recently transpired. Under the use of force training I’d been through, yes, I could’ve justifiably shot the guy.

Fortunately, the use of words kept him from pulling the trigger and keying off a series of events those of us that were there would likely still be dealing with. This was my first civilian perspective on gun violence and an eye-opening experience. It also raised questions…
