Learned this when I was an officer. Sometimes listening to the scene was the single best way to deescalate something and I'd never even have to say anything. Recently, as a civilian, I was in a situation where a bad guy had a gun on us. Listening helped me make the right moves not to up his level of action and try to keep people from getting shot. I can't tell people how important listening is.
