When Drama Follows You Into Your Sleep And It’s Not A Beautiful Woman, Hang Up

Why do we feel compelled to answer, even when we’re sleeping? It’s a question that anybody who’s lived an on-call existence struggles with. For many, the compulsion to answer their phone in the middle of the night is because of emergencies. But what about when the ringing phone is life drama following you into your sleep?
“This better be a beautiful woman or I’m hanging up,” I say to a caller one Saturday night.
It was two o’clock in the morning and I was exhausted after a long week of work. I was also a shift supervisor with a law enforcement agency, so the possibilities were endless when it came to middle-of-the-night calls.
“I know what you’re going to do, and I’m telling you I’m going to stop you,” says a voice on the line.
“Who the hell is this?” I ask, getting up, reaching into my drawer, and grabbing my handgun.
“Never mind that, you can’t kill him and think you’ll get away with it,” the voice warns me.
