The biggest thing is the requirements of each publication. Each publication, from Illumination to Writers Blokke, has its requirements. Some publications will take your work without delay. Others, however, require an editor's approval.
The question sometimes remains, where to publish? If you haven’t stumbled across the right publication, likely, you haven’t heard of it yet. It doesn’t mean they aren’t out there.

Myself, I like to write fiction as well as some informative articles and stories. I haven’t found a fiction publication that works well.
